RELATED: Are Anime Producers Losing Faith In Netflix?
Netflixhas long been a family favorite when settling down for a movie night - but for families looking to cut costs, there are some significant downgrades with the ad-tier plan. Netflix’s representatives have confirmed that ads on movies will resemble the cinema model, with a chunk of ads before an uninterrupted showing. In addition to this, movie quality will be capped at 720p, only one device will be able to stream at a time, and many big releases are missing from the catalog. Here are ten of the most notable movies missing with Netflix’s ad-tier.
10 It Follows
It Follows is a striking and enduring horror movie from 2014, starring Maika Monroe as a teenage girl who is stalked by a supernatural presence after having sleeping with her boyfriend. An underrated horror film, It Follows is highly critically-acclaimed as a metaphor for STDs that really resonated with viewers.
The atmosphere of this film is incredibly unique and interesting, and really marked a new tone for horror movies upon its release. Unfortunately for horror fans, this title is not available as part of Netflix’s ad-tier.
9 Umma
Another critically-acclaimed horror title, Umma is a unique and haunting movie starring Grey’s Anatomy and Killing Eve actress Sandra Oh. Given that ‘Umma’ is the Korean word for ‘mother’, it’s pretty easy to guess what the themes of the movie are. The movie itself, however, is far from predictable.
Amanda and her daughter Chris live on a quiet beekeeping farm in America when Amanda’s estranged mothers ashes arrive from Korea, and what follows is an intriguing, haunting, and terrifying tale of Amanda’s greatest fears.
8 Skyfall
Daniel Craig’s third Bond movie, Skyfall was the second highest-grossing movie of 2012, when it was released in theaters. This movie sees Judi Dench return as ‘M’, the head of the Secret Intelligence Service, while Craig as Bond investigates a series of data leaks and coordinated attacks on MI6.

This installment in the iconic franchise is not currently available for ad-tier subscribers. And there’s even more bad news for Bond fans…
7 Casino Royale
Like Skyfall, another Daniel Craig Bond movie has been struck from the ad-tier library. More notably, Casino Royale is Craig’s first Bond film, and the one to reboot the franchise after a four-year hiatus. The film received critical acclaim, with reviews praising Craig’s reinvention of the character and the new direction for the franchise.
The film also received praise for its use of practical stuntwork, as previous installments relied primarily on computer-generated placements.
6 Les Miserables
In this movie musical starring Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, and Russell Crowe, an ex-con called Jean Valjean breaks parole and reinvents himself as a civil authority and mill owner, much to the chagrin of the prison officer that released him. Javert, that prison officer, vows to bring Valjean back to jail.
Along the way, Valjean makes valuable connections and agrees to take on a dying woman’s daughter, as well as becoming a beloved social figure. Spanning over eight years, Les Miserables is a beloved musical turned movie that ad-tier subscribers are sure to feel the loss of.
5 Labyrinth
In this bizarre fantasy movie from 1986, Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) is given thirteen hours to rescue her baby brother Toby from the goblin king (David Bowie)’s labyrinth. Labyrinth is a beloved classic known for its wild character and creature designs, and catchy songs throughout. It was even directed by Jim Henson himself!

Sadly, this wacky and lovable movie isn’t available for ad-tier subscribers. There’s hope it will be added back in the future, but it’s certainly one of the most notable titles missing from launch.
4 The Little Rascals
The Little Rascals is a nostalgia trip for any 90s kid. Based on a series of shorts with the same name, this charming children’s comedy from 1994 is one many people will have grown up with, and may be hoping to show to their kids.
The movie features a group of boys who are members of the ‘He-Man Womun Haters Club’, their journey to win a go-kart race, and to welcoming ‘womun’ into the club. While it’s rather corny, it’s still a sweet watch even today.
3 Paddington
Family comedy Paddington might not seem like a huge loss, but this charming and heart-warming movie is loved by many. Ben Whishaw voices Paddington on a journey from the rainforest to the streets of London. Paddington tells the story of the friends he makes along the way, from the perspective of a polite young bear that sees the best in the world.
Based on the beloved children’s literature series ‘Paddington Bear’, this movie brought the bear to the big screen in 2014, and was met with critical and commercial success.
2 The Imitation Game
The Imitation Game tells the biographical story of Alan Turing, a British mathematics whiz that cracked Nazi codes in the Second World War. He even manages to crack Enigma, a code many thought was indecipherable. In 1952, however, despite potentially winning the Second World War for Britain, he is arrested for being a gay man.

This $233 million dollar-grossing movie was the highest-grossing independent film of 2014, and was incredibly well received by both critics and viewers.
1 Morbius
Perhaps more of a meme than a movie, Morbius hit the big screen in April 2022 to decidedly middling reactions. However, the movie became somewhat of a meme superstar - with doctored screenshots of its Wikipedia page going viral, photographs of empty theaters screening the film, and the ironic hashtag ‘#MorbiusSweep’ trending multiple times.
While it’s difficult to define Morbius’ success, one thing is for certain. For ad-tier subscribers, it’s no longer Morbin’ time.
