The dating series is centered around single people going on blind dates - but the catch is that they must wear elaborate masks and undergo prosthetics supplied by elite make-up artists. Apparently, the quirky dating series was inspired by the show The Masked Singer - which also made contestants have prosthetics done to disguise their identity. However, The Masked Singer was centered around finding talented artists and focusing on their skills rather than their looks. Audiences have seen this message of disguise in order to not be swayed by superficial reasons.

NBC’s The Voice is yet another show in which the judges have their chairs turned around while each performer takes the stage. The main difference that Netflix seems to have missed is that this theory of hiding one’s physical appearance in order to have someone’s full worth be recognized may be a better synopsis for talent scouting shows. The clips featured in the Sexy Beasts trailer showcase the contestants reverting back to their normal selves anyways. One man says, “ass first, personality second," while another person compliments their date by saying, “You are the best-looking devil I’ve ever seen.”

The large flaw that is so apparent while watching the trailer for Sexy Beasts is that the contestants are only adorned in prosthetics covering their face, but the mask doesn’t conceal their body from the other person. Contestants can still visibly see the other person’s body shape and image, therefore rendering the entire theme of falling in love based solely on personality a bit useless.

The other odd fact about the show is that the prosthetics that have been chosen to hide the contestant’s appearance are straight-up wacky. The Sexy Beasts trailer looks as if it could be a promo for a horrible new sci-fi or animation series, in which aliens and pandas sit down to grab a drink with one another at the bar.  It’s really hard to take the show seriously.

Although the message that Sexy Beasts is trying to get across is an important one to be spreading in a society that prioritizes physical appearance above all else - the way it’s been carried out is strangely uncomfortable to sit through. The contestants have to go on multiple blind dates with single people posing as odd creatures, and then they have to make their decision. If anything, the Netflix series will without a doubt be entertainingly hilarious because of its ridiculous content.

Sexy Beasts will premiere on July 21, 2021, on Netflix.
