Mortal Kombat and NetherRealm Studios’ popularity was recently shown after it was announced co-creator and game director Ed Boon would be inducted into the AIAS Hall of Fame at the 25th D.I.C.E awards. With the latest game released by the developer being Mortal Kombat 11 back in 2019, many fans are now hoping the studio will announce its next game soon.

A few years ago, NetherRealm Studios would release a game in its Injustice series, followed a year or two later by a Mortal Kombat title. However, this trend seems to have ended following the release of Mortal Kombat 11, with fans now debating whether NetherRealm will release a new Mortal Kombat title, or return to their fighting game series based on the DC Universe, Injustice. Now, a new job listing indicates that a new game is definitely in the works.

There were rumors that NetherRealm would be revealing a new title at the 2021 Game Awards, yet no such announcement was made, with the developer claiming that too many variables were at play to prevent its new game from being shown off. While this was a disappointing event for many, it did indicate that NetherRealm’s new title is in development. A job listing for a Senior Designer at NetherRealm further confirms that a new game is on the way. However, there aren’t many details to be seen besides the likelihood that a new NetherRealm title is coming, and that it focuses on “melee based combat” game. The job also requires experience in “combat design and implementation,” which again doesn’t give much information besides indicating that NetherRealm is making a fighting game.

With Mortal Kombat 11 being the most recently released game by NetherRealm, it would keep with tradition for the studio to then focus on an Injustice title. However, there are already rumors that Mortal Kombat 12 has already been leaked by a NetherRealm employee, meaning that Injustice fans would have to wait a little longer before being able to see a new DC fighting game.
