The new Legend, James “The Forge” McCormick, was announced just a few days ago in a developer video honoring the one-year anniversary of Apex Legends. Fans were confused with the announcement as it came with less fanfare than usual. On top of that, the character “Revenant” was being hinted at for months. Just as the masses were seemingly coming to grips with the idea of Forge as the Season 4 Legend, a video dropped that added more confusion to the mix than answers.

The video is from the “Stories from the Outlands” series, which has been used to show backstories thus far for characters like Wraith and Crypto in a crisp animated style. This particular video shows an interview between Lisa Stone, the interviewer, and James “The Forge” McCormick. After a few very standard questions, the lights flicker and things get ominous. As soon as the lights turn back on, the character Revenant is revealed to be sneaking up behind Forge and the camera turns away. Blood splatters about, Lisa Stone screams, and the video cuts out. Forge is dead. And thus the saga between Forge and Revenant continues.

One of the interesting theories among fans is that the Forge that died in the interview is not the true Forge. One of the pieces of information about Forge is that he is “often imitated.” Careful observers have noted that in the “Stories from the Outlands” animation Forge has a scar on his left eyebrow that he doesn’t have with his standard artwork. This may just be an artist’s rendition with the “Stories from the Outlands” series, or it could be that Revenant killed one of Forge’s imitators.

Season 4: Assimilation seems to have more questions than answers to far. This time last year the game didn’t even exist yet for fans, as Respawn surprise dropped one of the most successful games of the year without any prior announcement. So perhaps it again is enjoying the change to bombshell fans with shocking developments.

As fans speculate about what exactly is going on, it’s interesting to note that the official page on the Apex Legends website has been changed to say: “RIP JIMMIE ‘FORGE’ MCCORMICK” and “Never defeated (except for that one time).”

Apart from the Legends themselves, there are quite a few things that much of the fanbase would like to see worked on with the game. The real reason why Apex Legends is so fun is that the core DNA of the game is so solid. But lately, for many fans, there are issues that seem to be being neglected. Season 4: Assimilation would be a great opportunity to address some of Apex Legends’ concerns.

One can only wonder what Respawn is planning for Season 4: Assimilation. Perhaps Forge will still be the playable Legend, or maybe fans were bamboozled and Revenant is the Legend instead, or perhaps both. It could even be that fans will split partway through the season and play with a different Legend at the halfway mark, similar to how Respawn is handling Kings Canyon for Season 4.

Season 4: Assimilation will drop on February 4, 2020, the one-year anniversary of the Apex Legends.

Apex Legends is free-to-play on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
