According to EA CEO Andrew Wilson, the delay is part of a decision to expand the game’s social features. Prior leaks have compared Dylan to Destiny and The Division, both massively multiplayer titles with limited social features. Here’s exactly how Wilson described BioWare’s task:

Note that Wilson refers to Dylan as an action game here. He later stressed that BioWare’s new IP was not an RPG, which is striking considering that BioWare has never made a pure action game. That is, except for their debut mech simulator in 1996, Shattered Steel.

Little information regarding the new BioWare IP is available. The game’s currently known to be the main project of BioWare Edmonton, the main studio at BioWare, but is also reportedly pulling over a lot of work from BioWare Austin. It’s also potentially a sci-fi IP, though that might be a lingering detail from a crop of Star Wars related rumors that BioWare Austin was caught up in recently. Finally, the new IP was intended to be fully announced at this year’s E3. Whether or not the delay will effect that announcement is unclear.

What is clear is that BioWare’s Dylan project is now pushed into a year already crowded with big EA projects. 2018 could very well now contain Visceral Games’ Star Wars project, Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars game, and even the relatively new Motive Studios’ first project. Of course, none of these projects have been officially announced. Any of all of them could end up in 2019 or beyond.

Stay tuned for more information BioWare’s new IP in the month to come, at the very least an official E3 announcement or acknowledgement that the announcement will be coming later.
