This new Borderlands 3 event, dubbed the Rare Chest Riches Event, is set to launch today, January 30, by 3pm PST, and it is all about improving the game’s Rare Chests. More specifically, the event will increase the rate at which Rare Chests award rare loot, and that means that players will receive Legendaries more frequently when looting these caches.

Opening Rare Chests is not the only way that players can take advantage of the Borderlands 3 Rare Chest Riches Event, though, as watching a BL3 Twitch streamer open a Rare Chest will also be more likely to net the viewer with a Legendary. This assumes that both the viewer and caster have the Borderlands 3 ECHOcast Twitch Extension enabled, which is done by linking one’s Shift account with their Twitch account, and this new event certainly incentivizes fans to get the extension setup.
With respect to when the BL3 Rare Chest Riches Event will come to an end, it is currently scheduled to run until February 13 at 8:59am PST. That said, it seems that Gearbox Software has recently been using these temporary events to test more permanent changes, and it would thus not be extremely surprising to see the improvement to Rare Chest drop rates retained after the event comes to a conclusion.
Case in point: the developer has now confirmed that aspects of the aforementioned Borderlands 3 Farming Frenzy and Takedown at Maliwan’s Blacksite events are being made permanent. Indeed, this is something that many fans had hoped for it, and perhaps it is Gearbox’s intention to increase Rare Chest drop rates for good if the event is received well. However, until this is officially confirmed by the developer, players should make sure to get the most that they can out of the Rare Chest Riches Event.
Borderlands 3 is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
