Zouma is one of the hottest prospects in France with the young centre-back having impressed heavily for St Etienne and French boss Didier Deschamps has suggested that he could be in line to be France national captain one day.
A host of clubs around Europe were interested in taking the talented defender away from Ligue Un, but Zouma claims a personal phone call from Mourinho was all it took for him to make up his mind to move to Stamford Bridge.
Zouma told reporters, “Mourinho called me, he clearly told me he wanted me, and I jumped at the chance.
“He called me at night and he speaks French very well. I understood and responded, but I had nothing prepared.
“He told me to keep playing and we would keep up-to-date.”
Zouma is seen as the long-term successor to John Terry as the captain of Chelsea by the hierachy at the club with the 19-year-old earmarked to be a major part of the Blues’ future.
He signed a five-year-deal on transfer deadline day and has been loaned back to St Etienne for the remainder of the season at the player’s request.
Kurt Zouma has won 43 headed duels at a success rate of 77%, winning on average 3.52 aerial battles per 90 minutes played. John Terry has won 2.87 duels per 90 minutes and has a victory success of 63%.
