The Dark Souls trilogy, Demon’s Souls and its recent remake, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice have since been returned to with fans’ reinforced enthusiasm towards action-RPG titles from FromSoftware. However, while the same formula exists with some minor variances between each game, Elden Ring does offer more allowances and gameplay options than other FromSoftware titles. One fan has shared a funny instance of their friend’s first experience playing Dark Souls, where a pitfall gap causes them to make a tricky decision.

Redditor C_ore_X states that their friend, whose gameplay is shown in a short clip, is new to Dark Souls. In what appears to be Dark Souls’ notorious Depths, the player comes across a gap that they must make their way across. But instead of sprinting and leaping across as is the customary method for such hazards, the player instantly turns their character and back-steps directly into the gap. This maneuver seems unintentional, and perhaps from a panicked series of inputs, but it produces a funny result nonetheless.

It is unknown if C_ore_X’s friend had played Elden Ring prior to trying out Dark Souls, but there are certainly learning curves they must adapt to. If this friend had played Elden Ring shortly beforehand, they may be familiar with the ability to freely jump wherever they please, as well as the ability to crouch for stealth. In Dark Souls, rather, there is still a jump mechanic, but it can only be performed while the player is sprinting. Either way, learning these mechanics for the first time in either game can be up to the player’s own experimentation with controls.

The Depths are no walk in the park, from a labyrinth of sewer networks to the rats and basilisks that wait within. Whether Dark Souls is C_ore_X’s friend’s first FromSoftware experience or not, it is fairly difficult on a first playthrough and presents many challenging foes and areas that rival foes and areas in Elden Ring. But with tricks and tips learned from other FromSoftware games, each new experience players have may be supported by their knowledge of how to approach certain mechanics.

Dark Souls is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
