Described in the trailer as being the “ideal tool to make RPGs”, the engine in The Witcher 2 looks pretty impressive. Designed by all the members of the development team at CD Projekt Red, the new tool seemingly allows for a more streamlined development process all round; from the implementation of the storyline to the design of the NPCs, every base is covered with the new technology.

Personally, I’m incredibly intrigued by the tools being used to make The Witcher 2. When I met Tomasz Gop and Marek Ziemak at this year’s Eurogamer Expo 2010, the two developers were keen to point out that the engine behind The Witcher 2 came first, and that made it easier to design the rest of the game.

The Witcher 2 is shaping up to be one of my most anticipated titles of early 2011. Although it’s a PC-only title (at least, for the time being), the risks that it seems CD Projekt Red are willing to take are admirable to say the least. From the initial debut trailer back in March this year, to the seemingly monumental decisions the player will face, everything about this game screams ‘ambition’. If CD Projekt Red can pull it off, then The Witcher 2 will be a strong contender Game of the Year – and perhaps even Game of the Decade.

Marek Ziemak: “It wasn’t very difficult [to implement the stories] but, of course, it takes much more testing; you know, you’ve got to test everything like sixteen times, at least! Laughs But, then again, we were ready for it. We had it in ‘The Witcher’, and it’s just extended in ‘The Witcher 2’, but it’s a progress, it’s not something that’s completely new.
